Kathryn Gertrude Brown, Reverend

KathrynGertrudeBrown

I am redeemed; bought with a price. Jesus has changed my whole life. If anybody asks you just who I am, tell them that I am redeemed!

Biography:

An ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Rev. Kathryn G. Brown, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior in July, 1984. Having preached her trial sermon in October, 1988, at Contee A. M. E. Zion Church in Washington, D.C., Pastor Brown has served the body of Christ in a variety of offices. In June, 1994, she was appointed Pastor of Stephen Gill Spottswood A. M. E. Zion Church in Landover, MD. Rev. Brown served faithfully until May, 2002, when she was appointed the salaried Director of Christian Education for the Philadelphia-Baltimore Conference, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She also serves as Assistant Advisor of the Young Adults in Christian Ministries (A. M. E. Zion Church) and Program Coordinator for the Christian Education Department (A. M. E. Zion Church). Since October, 2000, she has served as Dean of the Leadership Training Institute and Preaching Convocation for the Mid-Atlantic II Episcopal Area.

Rev. Brown is blessed to minister to singles, youth, young adults, women, students, Christian educators and other church leaders through retreats, workshops, seminars, and worship services throughout the country. Her primary area of service is in Christian Education. Describing herself as preaching the "down to earth" gospel of a "down to earth" God, Rev. Brown’s heart's desire is to develop committed, credible disciples through life application of the scriptures. As Pastor of Spottswood A. M. E. Zion Church, she organized the “Resurrection Academy,” designed to provide 1st-8th graders with academic, spiritual, cultural and social enrichment during Holy Week and other school breaks. She has developed and implemented a variety of community outreach ministries, including neighborhood “Back to School” Festivals and “Communifest.” Both have taken the church into the community in an effective and meaningful way.

Realizing that ministry is not confined to the inside of the church, Rev. Brown has shared her special gifts and abilities in programs outside of the church. This includes serving as the Black History Month Program speaker for the FBI, workshop presenter for youth outreach programs sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and guest preacher for the 2000 Advent Service at Rankin Chapel, Howard University.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, and a product of the New York City Public School System, Rev. Brown rejoices in every opportunity to dispel some of the myths associated with life in Harlem. She is especially grateful to God for the experiences she had as an active member of Mother A. M. E. Zion Church (Harlem, NY) during her childhood and adolescent years.

In 1977, she was blessed to graduate from Salem College, Salem, West Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Relations. Rev. Brown is also a graduate of the University of Maryland at Baltimore where she earned a Master's Degree in Social Work.

Rev. Brown is blessed to develop and conduct training sessions through LTBL (Let There Be Light) Enterprises, which she established in 1999. She also serves as an instructor in the Professional Development and Leadership Academy at Howard University, Washington, D.C. Previous employment experience includes serving as the Program Assistant for the Annenberg Honors Program in the School of Communication at Howard University; serving as an instructor in the Social Work Program at Bowie State University; and nine years of experience as a social worker with Prince George's County Department of Social Services, where she worked with families, volunteers, community groups and children.

The only daughter of Mrs. Esther Brown and the late Eugene Brown, Rev. Brown is single and is eager to share the joys of "singleness" with others. She has two nieces, one nephew, two godsons, two goddaughters, and a host of other young people whom she nurtures, guides and encourages.

To God be the glory for the things He has done, is doing and will do!
